According to reports, Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, a Nadaun MLA, has the backing of most Congress MLAs. For the Assembly elections, he was appointed chairman of the Congress Campaign Committee.
He was a tenacious warrior who rose through the ranks and held the position of state unit president of the party for a record six years, from 2013 to 2019, despite constantly sparring with six-time chief minister Virbhadra Singh. From Nadaun in the Hamirpur district, he won the assembly election for the first time in 2003. He kept the seat in 2007 but lost it in 2012. He then won it again in 2017 and 2022.
Sukhu will hold the position for the first time as a Congress leader from Lower Himachal, which includes regions like Nalagarh, Una, Hamirpur, Kangra, and the lower hills of Kullu that were amalgamated with Himachal in 1966. After Prem Kumar Dhumal of the BJP, he will be the second chief minister to come from the Hamirpur district.
By winning 40 of the 68 assembly seats, the Congress deposed the BJP in the hill state. The results were announced on Thursday after the election polls closed on November 12.
