Strong US-Japan military alliance could pose threat to China’s regional stability

Vivid News 24: Since the war of 1962, China has diligently built relationships with all of India’s neighbors except Bhutan to encircle the biggest democracy on earth and use them to obstruct New Delhi’s legitimate position in the world.

Under the Rajapaksa government, China’s client states Pakistan and Sri Lanka attempted to weaken India by allowing Beijing to virtually establish naval bases in Hambantota in Sri Lanka and Gwadar in unrest-ridden Balochistan.

Due to China’s tight ties to the communist governments in Nepal, Myanmar, and Khaleda Zia’s BNP in Bangladesh, India was burdened with its neighbors while Beijing took Center stage. With all of its client states experiencing a serious economic crisis and its long-time rival Japan emerging quickly in the East alongside the QUAD grouping, China is now the focus of this Dragon maneuver.

Tokyo and Washington have delivered a strong message to Beijing by reiterating that Article V of the Japan-US Security Treaty applies to China’s disputed Senkaku Islands and by increasing the US military presence in Okinawa’s Yonaguni Islands, which are only 120 kilometers from Taiwan.

It is clear from the joint statement issued during the US-Japan two-plus-two meeting this morning in Washington that China will have to militarily consider Tokyo in its hostile campaign against India, Taiwan, and Australia.

Japan has abandoned its post-World War II pacifism in favor of seeing China as its largest strategic adversary, revising its national security strategy in the process. China had a comparable heritage with the Imperial Japan Army in the early 19th century, much like the Indian Army does with the legacy of the 1962 conflict.

Now that China has a close partner in Russia, the security situation in Asia has changed. Beijing is under counter-pressure from Japan, the Philippines, Australia, and India, or what might roughly be called counter-encirclement. Contrary to previous decades, when Japan had made massive investments in China, the situation has altered, much to the dismay of President Xi Jinping, as Japan has returned to its former ally, the US.

According to the joint statement, “Facing a severely contested environment…the forward posture of US forces in Japan should be upgraded…by positioning more adaptable, resilient, and mobile forces with increased intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance, anti-ship, and transportation capabilities.”

The joint statement also referred to the South China Sea arbitration ruling from July 12, 2016, which favored the Philippines but was disregarded by China. In addition to outlining their fundamental stances on Taiwan, the two-plus-two declaration raised grave concerns regarding Hong Kong’s autonomy and abuses of human rights against the Uyghur Sunni Muslim community in Xinjiang.

India has responded to PLA aggression in East Ladakh in the same way that Japan has committed to confronting the Chinese challenge. According to Army Chief General Manoj Pande, no less than 55000 troops and 400 cannons have been deployed to counter the PLA challenge along the 1597 km frontier in Ladakh.

With Canberra being protected by the US security agreement and Manila continuing to be a loyal partner of Washington, both India and Japan have reinforced their connections with Australia and the Philippines. When these developed nations are plotted on a map, it becomes clear that Beijing fell victim to the trap it set for its enemies.
