Vivid News 24: Following a hugely popular Lunar New Year event, a mass shooting occurred late Saturday night in a community east of Los Angeles, leaving nine people dead, according to police. According to Sgt. Bob Boese of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, the gunshot was heard at a shop on Garvey Avenue in Monterey Park at 10:22 p.m. Boese reported early on Sunday that the shooter is a male.
Several police officers responded to reports of the gunshot, but authorities did not provide any information for several hours. About 10 miles (16 km) outside of downtown Los Angeles, in the city of Monterey Park, which has a population of about 60,000, lies a sizable Asian community.
Seung Won Choi, the proprietor of the Clam House seafood BBQ restaurant opposite the gunshot scene, told the Los Angeles Times that three people forced their way in and urged him to close the door. According to Choi’s sources, there was a gunman with a machine gun who was supposedly bringing along several bullets so he could reload.
