Many Palestinians view prisoners as heroes for the Palestinian cause, from the occupied West Bank to the Hamas-run Gaza Strip. Ben-Gvir declared that he will continue to carry out his harsh practices for Palestinian captives notwithstanding the recent rocket firing from Gaza. To discuss a solution, he requested an urgent Security Cabinet meeting.

Israeli-Palestinian violence has increased recently, despite calls for calm from U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s visit. Ten people, mostly militants, were murdered last week during an Israeli military operation on a militant stronghold in the West Bank city of Jenin. The following day, seven people were killed in a shooting by Palestinians in a Jewish neighbourhood in east Jerusalem.

Two Israelis were hurt over the weekend in a separate gunshot in east Jerusalem by a 13-year-old Palestinian. Israel authorized a number of punitive actions against the Palestinians in response to the disturbance. In a statement released on Tuesday, Hamas denounced the alleged abuse of Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails, particularly female prisoners.

The Israeli Prison Service claimed that the issues began last Friday when it put scores of Palestinian detainees in solitary confinement following their celebration of the fatal Palestinian attack outside the east Jerusalem synagogue. According to the prison system, a female Palestinian detainee who was sentenced to isolation attempted to set fire to her cell in retaliation.

In a separate action, the Israeli Ofer Prison near Ramallah had its televisions confiscated from three of the cells. The new Israeli government’s policy of agitating against inmates, according to Amani Srahneh of the Palestinian Prisoners Club, is causing “a very stressful situation” with the escalating measures.
