Fresh snowfall halts air traffic, train services in Kashmir

Vivid News 24: The first significant snowfall of the season fell in Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday, interrupting surface travel and daily life in the area. The National Highway, which links Kashmir to the rest of India, has been shut down between Srinagar and Jammu. Other vital routes connecting Srinagar with far-flung areas of Kashmir, like the Srinagar-Leh Highway, are also closed.

Due to the Srinagar airport’s suspension of flight operations, the inclement weather also had an impact on air traffic to and from the Valley. In a statement, the Srinagar Airport claimed, “Our visibility is only 200 meters, and snow is falling nonstop. We are also shoveling snow at the same time. Every flight is running late. Please verify the status of your flight with your airlines before heading to the airport to minimize annoyance and traffic.

In the Kashmir region, all train service has also been halted. “Until the railroad line’s snow is cleared, the train service will be discontinued. The railway will reopen as soon as the snow has been cleared. WDS 4 will travel first after the snow has been cleared, and then the train is anticipated to run, according to a statement from Kashmir Railways.

The government has rescheduled all of the postgraduate exams in the Valley in light of the recent snowfall. “All PG, engineering, and other exams that were scheduled to take place on January 30, 2023 (Monday), have been postponed due to inclement weather. The Kashmir University Controller of Examinations declared that new exam dates would be released independently in the future.

The highway is the main route that links Kashmir to the rest of the country and provides the Kashmir valley with its sole means of support. The route is used by trucks traveling to Kashmir that are bringing necessary supplies and other vehicles, as well as trucks leaving Kashmir carrying fruit for the rest of the nation.

The minimum temperature today was -0.2°C in Srinagar, -1.4°C in Pahalgam, and -4.6°C in Gulmarg. The minimum temperatures in the Ladakh region were -6.8°C in Kargil and -0.6°C in Leh, while in Jammu they were 10.4°C in Katra, 1.2°C in Batote, 0.2°C in Banihal, and -0.6°C in Bhaderwah. Today, the Kashmir region is expected to get mild to moderate snowfall, according to the meteorological agency.
