Amazon may lay off 20,000 employees

Vivid News 24: In the upcoming months, the world’s largest online retailer Amazon may fire up to 20,000 staff members, including senior managers, according to a Computerworld article. Employees from the corporate, technical, and distribution center wings are anticipated to be let go by the corporation.

According to sources with direct knowledge of the situation who talked with Computerworld on the condition of anonymity and categorize employees at Amazon into Levels 1 through 7, the layoff is likely to affect staff members at all levels.

The layoffs come after an unusual hiring frenzy during the pandemic when e-commerce businesses had seen remarkable growth thanks to stay-at-home orders issued by nations all over the world.

The New York Times reported earlier this month that Amazon intended to fire up to 10,000 workers. The recent revelation, however, raises the possibility that Amazon’s situation is worse than previously thought as it suggests that the company may be considering letting go of some of its 20,000 employees.

According to reports, the business asked managers to pinpoint issues with employee performance. 20,000 workers represent just about 1.3% of the company’s 1.5 million global employees. Employees who fall under non-permanent categories are also included.

According to the Computerworld article, if they are laid off, Amazon employees will be given a 24-hour notice and severance pay. It would be the biggest layoff in the history of the business.

“The layoffs are being made throughout the company; no specific division or location has been mentioned. We were informed that this was due to the corporation hiring too many people during the pandemic and the necessity for cost-cutting as the business has been declining.
